Why is TISSNET 2021 clubbed under as MBA Entrance Exam 2021?
Technically TISSNET 2021 is the entrance exam for MA program admissions in TISS. However, the MA HR and other MA programs are extremely popular courses for MBA aspirants. Thus, those who appear in other MBA entrance exams such as CAT 2020, XAT 2021, SET 2020/2021 also appear in TISSNET exam.
TISS NET 2021 v/s Other MBA Entrance Exams
Since we now know why TISS NET is clubbed with MBA Entrance Exam 2021, let us check some major differences between TISSNET and other MBA entrance exams:
TISSNET v/s CAT
Competition is high in CAT exam obviously. CAT scores are used for admission in IIMs all over the nation. However, TISSNET score is used for admission in TISS campuses only. And thus the competition in CAT is much greater than in TISSNET.
However there a wee bit of similarities between the two. Both exams contain 3 sections in their question paper out of which 2 sections are similar in nature and are aimed at testing similar kinds of abilities in appearing candidates. These 2 sections are Mathematical Skills and Logical Reasoning & English Proficiency of TISSNET and Quantitative Ability (QA) &Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC) of CAT, respectively.
TISSNET v/s SNAP
SNAP scores form the gateway for admission across 16 Symbiosis B-schools across the nation. Just as TISSNET scores are used for MA admission across TISS campuses. However, Symbiosis being one of the most popular MBA destinations among the candidates, it witnesses more competition than TISS. Also, the scores of TISSNET is used for admission in 3 TISS campuses that offer MA course at Mumbai, Tuljapur, and Hyderabad.
TISSNET is similar to SNAP in the exam pattern. However, there is no general knowledge asked in SNAP, but it is asked in TISSNET. SNAP has General English: Reading Comprehension, Verbal Reasoning, Verbal Ability, Analytical & Logical Reasoning, and Quantitative, Data Interpretation & Data Sufficiency sections. Whereas TISSNET has English Proficiency, Mathematical Skills and Logical Reasoning, and General Awareness.
TISSNET vs XAT
After CAT, another most popular MBA entrance exam is XAT. XAT scores are used by more than 800 institutes for admission to MBA, PGDM, and other management courses. Hence again the competition in XAT is higher than TISSNET.
However, unlike CAT and SNAP, XAT has a general awareness section. This stands to be a common point between TISSNET and the XAT exam. XAT has one extra section that is unlike any other MBA exam and also, unlike TISSNET. This section is the Decision-Making section. This makes XAT the most complicated exam in terms of the exam pattern.
How To Prepare for TISSNET 2021 (and TISS MAT 2021)?
Aspirants who are preparing for TISSNET exam 2021 may be hard pressed to find relevant answers to this question. A reason behind the lack of too many resources for this exam’s preparation is that coaching centers for MBA entrance exams do not usually give too much bandwidth to TISSNET preparation. Nevertheless, the exam has its own niche of test takers. Specially those eyeing the HR course, compete for TISS as well as XLRI.
Needless to say, if you are a TISSNET 2021 test taker, then you should sharpen your axe before going to win this war. We have provided below preparation tips and recommended some good books for TISSNET preparation, check below:
English Proficiency
Last year, in this section, 10 out of the 30 questions were on reading comprehension. That is 33% of the paper. So to ace this section you have to be quick in reading and comprehending passages.
You can build this skill by reading newspapers daily (best to read op-eds, editorials).
Plus, solve multiple RCs from MBA entrance exam preparation books.
Recommended Books for English Proficiency section of TISSNET 2021
- Word Power Made Easy by Norman Lewis
- All About Words by Maxwell Nurnberg
- How to Prepare for Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension for CAT by Arun Sharma
Mathematical Skills and Logical Reasoning
The level of questions asked on maths are the ones you can solve by having a good grasp of topics taught in NCERT class 5 to 10/11 maths textbooks.
If you have a general background in mathematics, then this section will be easy to ace. Though you do have to build up a good pace with speed and accuracy. (Though lack of negative marking means you can take some good guesses too).
For speed building in maths, solve as many MCQs as you can.
Coming to the logical reasoning based questions, there is no theory or shortcut to them. The best way to go about them is to solve past year TISSNET papers or MBA entrance exam papers. Then for specific type of questions that you fall short of answering, check out youtube videos on shortcut methods to solve them. Usually for each type of logical reasoning question, there is a specific approach, which, if you follow, you can easily solve those questions
Recommended Books for Mathematical Skills and Logical Reasoning section of TISSNET 2021
General Awareness
This is the most elusive section. Carrying the maximum weightage of the paper (40%), general awareness is all about general knowledge.
You should read the news daily (online / print, either). Good newspapers to follow are TOI, Hindu, Indian Express. It is not just the editorial but the complete newspaper that you should read.
Besides, for static GK and a crunched up version of major GK topics, you can read GK books for competitive exams. Remember that this will be the make or break section. So those with a good grasp on GK will automatically be at an advantage in TISSNET 2021.
(We will talk more, in detail for this section soon. GK preparation for TISSNET is a vast topic in itself).
Recommended Books for General Awareness section of TISSNET 2021
All said and done, the above books are also applicable to other MBA entrance exams as well as competitive exams. Therefore it is best to also have some books and study material in hand that are specifically for TISSNET exam 2021. Few that are popular on amazon are the following.
- Chandresh Agrawal’s Study Package book on TISSNET
- Wiley’s ExamXpert GK and Issues of Social Concern – IRMA & TISS – NET
Preparation for TISS PAT 2021 and TISS MAT 2021
Build your knowledge for the TISS MAT exam by doing the following:
- Read Economic Times
- Whenever you encounter a new finance or business related term, google it and understand it.
- More or less the preparation of TISS MAT happens alongside that of TISSNET.
- However do keep in mind that there will be negative marking in this section. Whereas there is no negative marking in TISSNET!
