Government officials will meet on Monday, January 25, 2021, to decide on two major points pertaining to the national level medical entrance exam –
- Whether to hold NEET 2021 online? and
- Whether to hold NEET 2021 twice?
Times of India, and other national newspapers reported today, on January 23, 2021, on the said meeting.
As per the reports, officials from the following bodies will be getting together to weigh the pros and cons, and feasibility of the matter:
- Ministry of Education (MoE)
- Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW)
- National Testing Agency (NTA)
The final decision will be taken keeping in mind the benefit to medical aspirants, and logistical concerns surrounding the change. Thereafter dates for NEET 2021 application form is expected to be announced.
Will NEET 2021 Be Twice a Year?
It was in the year 2019 that JEE Main, the national level engineering entrance exam was taken twice a year from once. Then this year, in 2021, its frequency has been further increased to 4 times. On one hand it helps students get more chances, whereas on the other hand, it increases the number of times a student has to sit for the test which could be more pressure inducing to some.
However by and large, the decision to increase exam frequency is met with positive feedback from most quarters. Students feel it improves their chances. Also, given the current state of confusion – with scattered board exam dates, uncertainty of health and other such concerns – having more exam date options eliminates the concern of missing an exam on one date.
To this end, senior officials from AIIMS and other medical institutes feel the same. Dr. Rakesh Yadav, who is the President of AIIMS Faculty Association, and Dr. S Kumar, the VC of Sri Devcaraj Urs University were quoted in the report as saying that they feel that one bad day should not result in wasting an academic year.
NEET 2021 in Online Mode
Other than increasing the frequency of exam, changing its mode to online is also on the cards. This would be a critical change to the exam considering the backlash the proposal has been facing the past years.
However the difference is that in the past, students were more comfortable with an offline exam. However this year, the whole academic year (more or less) has been online. Thus, students are more comfortable with an online exam now more than ever.
Other advantages of taking the exam online would be to ensure more transparency, and eliminate delays in checking of papers and delays it used to cause.
Final Decision on Will NEET 2021 be Online and Twice on Monday
The big announcement on NEET 2021 date, application form, mode, frequency is now expected on Monday, January 25, 2021.
Students shall be waiting in anticipation for a positive news.
NTA will conduct National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, as the single gateway for medical admissions in the country. It is the sole exam for MBBS, BDS, AYUSH admissions in all colleges that offer the courses in the nation.
It was recently confirmed that there will not be any change in the syllabus of NEET UG. However there could be changes in the pattern – with introduction of optional questions – to ensure that students who have studied this year as per reduced syllabus are not negatively impacted.
