JEE Main 2021 Result – About NTA Score

The result of JEE Main is prepared based on the final answer key of JEE Main 2021. The raw scores of the candidates are converted into percentile scores (NTA scores) using the normalisation process and on the basis of the JEE Main percentile score, rank is determined.

  • The result of B.E / B.Tech shall have the NTA scores for each of the three subjects (Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry) and the total score.
  • The result of B.Arch and B.Planning shall have the NTA scores for each of the three subjects (Mathematics, Aptitude Test, Drawing Test or Planning Based Test) and the total score.

Percentile Scores: Percentile scores of JEE Main 2021 are scores based on the relative performance of all those who appear for the examination. Basically, the marks obtained are transformed into a scale ranging from 100 to 0 for each session of examinees.

The percentile scores is only calculated up to 7 decimal places.

The step by step process of calculation of the normalised score for preparation of result is as follows:

Step-1: Distribution of Examinees in two shifts:

  • Candidates have to be distributed into two sessions randomly so that each session has an approximately equal number of candidates. Hence, NTA hold JEE Main in sessions, which are:

    Session-1: Day-1 Shift-1, Session-2: Day-1 Shift-2

Step 2: Calculation of Raw Scores

NTA first determines the raw score for each candidate. The raw score is calculated on the basis of marking scheme which is:

  • +4 marks for correct answer.
  • -1 mark for each MCQ.
  • No marks is deducted for wrong NVT question.
  • No marks is added or deducted for wrong NVT question

Step-3: Preparation of JEE Main Percentile Score:

To calculate percentile score, NTA uses raw score and the formula below.

NTA calculates percentile score separately for each session and paper.

Next the percentile scores for all the sessions (Session-1: Day-1 Shift-1, Session-2: Day-1 Shift-2) would be merged and shall be called the NTA scores which is then be used for the compilation of result and further processing for deciding the allocation.

To understand the normalisation process with example, check Appendix – VII of the information brochure – click here.

The ties are resolved in following order in this paper:

  • NTA score in Mathematics, followed by
  • NTA score in Physics, followed by
  • NTA score in Chemistry, followed by
  • Candidates having a lesser ratio of negative to positive responses

Tie Breaker Criteria for Paper 2a (B.Arch)

The ties are resolved in following order in this paper:

  • NTA score in Mathematics, followed by
  • NTA score in Aptitude Test, followed by
  • NTA score in Drawing Test, followed by
  • Candidates having a lesser ratio of negative to positive responses

Tie Breaker Criteria for Paper 2b (B.Plan)

  • NTA score in Mathematics, followed by
  • NTA score in Aptitude Test, followed by
  • NTA score in Planning Based Questions, followed by
  • Candidates having a lesser ratio of negative to positive responses

Only the All India Rank (AIR) is used for admissions through Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) / Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) to NITs / IIITs / CFTIs / SFIs/ Others.
