Calculate GATE 2021 Marks Yourself!
Admission is via GATE Score and not GATE marks and what is the GATE normalized score? So many score / marks for a single exam. Very confusing, right? Worry not, we have got you covered! So basically, the score of GATE 2021 is calculated in 3 steps. This score is calculated using a set of parameters set by the IITs and detailed explanation for this is as follows:
Let us give you an overview on what happens in GATE 2021 score calculation:
- First, using the marking scheme the raw score is calculated. This is GATE marks out of 100.
- Then, raw scores are normalized but only for multiple session paper.
- Lastly, raw marks (for single session papers) and normalized marks (for multi-session papers) are converted into GATE score. This is GATE marks out of 1000.
Step #1 – Calculate GATE 2021 Raw Score
So the first step is to get the score of the candidates out of 100 in their papers. This is done using the marking scheme of GATE 2021, which is given below:
|Type of questions||For correct answer||Negative Marking|
|MCQs||1 or 2 marks|| 1/3 for 1 marks Qs|
2/3 for 2 marks Qs
|NATs||1 or 2 marks||no negative marking|
|MSQs||1 or 2 marks||no negative marking|
Step #2 – Calculate GATE 2021 Normalised Score
This year the papers that were held in more than 2 sessions were:
- Mechanical Engineering (ME)
- Civil Engineering (CE)
- Computer Science & IT (CS)
For these papers the raw scores of the candidates will be transformed to normalised scores, using the formula below:
Normalization mark of jth candidate in the ith session M̂ ij is given by:
If you are calculating the score yourself, it is recommended to skip this step, because you do not have relevant data needed for it. You can directly go to the next step. However when IIT B declares result, they will calculate normalized score.
Step #3. Finally, Calculation of GATE Score
Now that we have the raw scores for the single session paper and the normalised score for the multi session paper, the GATE score can be calculated. Here is how:
M: Marks obtained by the candidate (actual marks for single session papers andnormalized marks for multi-session papers)
Mq: is the qualifying marks for general category candidate in the paper. Click here to check past year qualifying marks and use that.
M̅ t: is the mean of marks of top 0.1% or top 10 (whichever is larger) of the candidates who appeared in the paper (in case of multi-session papers including all sessions). Scroll down to check marks of last year’s toppers.
Sq: 350, is the score assigned to Mq
St: 900, is the score assigned to M̅ t
In the GATE 2021, the qualifying marks for general category students in each subject will be 25 marks (out of 100) or μ + σ, whichever is larger. Here μ is the mean and σ is the standard deviation of marks of all the candidates who appeared in the paper.
Marks of Last Year’s Toppers – You can use this for score calculation
|S.No.||Paper||Paper Code||Last Year’s Topper’s Marks in GATE|
|3||Architecture and Planning||AR||72|
|8||Computer Science and Information Technology||CS||91|
|10||Electronics and Communication Engineering||EC||82|
|12||Ecology and Evolution||EY||84|
|13||Geology and Geophysics||GG||82|
|20||Production and Industrial Engineering||PI||88|
|21||Textile Engineering and Fibre Science||TF||89.33|
