Normalization For IIM CAT Result 2020
As can be noticed that the CAT scorecard has 2 types of scores: Scaled scores and percentile scores. Thus it is clear that IIMs, do not use the raw score of the candidates to evaluate the candidates. The raw score of the exam is somehow converted to scaled and percentile scores. Here is how it is done:
- Step 1: Raw score of the candidates are calculated using the marking scheme of the exam
- Step 2: The raw score is then converted to scaled scores.
- Step 3: Scaled scores are then changed to normalised scores to get the percentile score in each section and in the overall exam.
Step 1: Calculation of CAT 2020 raw scores:
The CAT 2020 raw score shall be calculated by checking the answers of the candidates marked in the exam. For each correct answer, the candidates get 3 marks and for each wrong MCQ answer, 1 mark is deducted. There is no negative marking done against the wrong TITAs.
Step 2: How is CAT 2020 scaled score calculated via normalization method?
The normalisation of the scores is done with the help of mean and standard deviation (SD). The formula to calculate the scaled score is given below:

Step 3: How is CAT 2020 percentile score calculated?
CAT 2020 percentile score is calculated on the basis of scaled score. To do so, following formula is used:
N – Total number of candidates who appeared for CAT 2020.
R – Rank assigned to a candidates, on the basis of the scaled score.
- If 2 or more candidates are getting the same rank while assigning then identical rank is assigned to both the candidates.
Formula for CAT percentile score (p) = [ (N – R) / N] X 100]
Note: IIMs round off the calculated percentile score (P) to 2 decimal points.

IIM Admission Criteria 2021 Through CAT 2020 Results
After the result of CAT 2020 is announced, IIMs release a list of shortlisted candidates. It is released on the basis of cut off. The admission policies of all the IIMs remains more or less the same. However there can be slight changes. To understand the admission policy, let us understand the generation of the IIMs.
There are 3 generations of the IIMs: First generation, second generation, and third generation. The admission policy of these 3 generations of the IIMs are different here is how:
IIM Selection Criteria 2021 in 1st Generation IIMs
The first generation IIMs and some of the second generation IIMs, follow their own selection process: This includes-
In the first stage: IIMs take into account the Common Admission Test (CAT) percentile score and then prepare a list of shortlisted candidates for PI and WAT. The CAT percentile cutoff differs as per the IIMs and there is a relaxation of percentile for the reserved category candidates.
The second stage: The shortlisted candidates appear for PI and WAT at the respective IIMs where they are shortlisted.
The third stage: In this stage, admission criteria involve a calculation of the score for final admission. This score is called the composite score (CS) in most of the IIMs. The calculation of CS is based on the weightage given to various factors. These factors differ from IIM to IIM. Some of the factors are:
- CAT score – This is taken into account by all IIMs
- PI and WAT scores
- Past academic performance (PAP) – Class 10, 12 and UG marks
- Work experience
- Reference letter
The fourth stage: The candidates who are selected for final admission, have to report at the respective IIM and complete the admission process and document verification.
IIM CAP 2021
Most of the second generation IIMs follow a common admission process via Common Admission Procedure (CAP): This includes –
- CAT Score – The conducting IIM sends candidate’s CAT Scores to all the members of the CAP
- Shortlisting – CAP members release a shortlist based upon the percentile of a candidate in the Common Admission Test (CAT). Candidates receive the intimation via an e-mail for a single WAT/PI.
- CAP Form – The candidates also receive a CAP form, which they have to fill to further the procedure.
- WAT /PI – Then the candidates face the CAP procedure, which consists of a single WAT/PI.
- Final Merit List – The scores of the candidates in the WAT/PI are then sent to all the IIMs under CAP. Taking the score into the account, all the CAP IIMs prepare a final shortlist.
The following IIMs are part of CAP, as per last year (IIM Rohtak left CAP last year to follow their own selection process like the first generation IIMs):
IIM Ranchi – Conducting body of CAP last year, IIM Trichy, IIM Raipur, IIM Udaipur, IIM Kashipur, IIM Amritsar, IIM Bodh Gaya, and IIM Sambalpur.
